New research shows that training your brain using a smartphone app can reduce tinnitus, the perception of sound without an external source.

Tinnitus is irritating and intrusive and can't be turned off as long as the brain focuses on it—and focusing on tinnitus only reinforces it.

Mindear is a mobile app compatible with both Android and iPhone that helps users advance through educational modules, games, and exercises designed to teach the brain how to ignore tinnitus.

The researchers from Australian, New Zealand, French and Belgian universities published the following results in Frontiers in Audiology and Otology.

  • In a 30-patient trial, nearly two-thirds of participants experienced worthwhile improvements after 16 weeks of using the app.
  • Participants consulting with available online psychologists benefited in eight weeks.

Why it matters

Roughly one in four people deal with tinnitus in their life.

  • Tinnitus imposes significant personal and professional costs, such as anxiety, depression, and reduced concentration.
  • Roughly, seven million Americans experience severe tinnitus.

The MindEar app combines various techniques to personalize tinnitus management.

How it works

MindEar's brain-training strategy suppresses stress hormones, reducing the brain's focus on tinnitus. The treatment uses a combination of

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Sound conditioning
  • Relaxation techniques

“One of the most common misconceptions about tinnitus is that there is nothing you can do about it; that you just have to live with it. This is simply not true. Professional help from those with expertise in tinnitus support can reduce the fear and anxiety attached to the sound patients experience.” —Fabrice Bardy, audiologist and co-founder of MindEar

Reality check: While there is no cure for tinnitus, many sufferers find relief through management strategies. Mindear offers a variety of relevant strategies.
