Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) now face a more clearly understood challenge: hearing loss significantly compounds their difficulty in walking and thinking simultaneously. A groundbreaking study from Concordia University (Montreal) reveals a hidden connection between hearing and cognitive decline that could change how we approach aging.

Why it matters

Hearing loss directly worsens dual-task performance in cognitively impaired older adults, increasing fall risk and affecting daily function. Not only is their communication dulled, but their mobility and safety are as well.

1 big idea

The brain remains adaptable. Even with poor hearing and cognitive performance, targeted physical and cognitive training can dramatically improve the ability to manage complex tasks.

By the numbers

  • 75 adults with MCI participated.
  • 60 to 85 years old.
  • 20-week program.

A closer look

Researchers found poor hearing strongly linked to slower walking, less stable gait, and greater difficulty performing mental tasks while moving. The effects were most pronounced in those with both poor hearing and lower cognitive scores.

  • Males often experience earlier, more severe hearing loss. This study is the first to document its specific link to dual-task performance in men with MCI.
  • Targeted training that combined exercise with computerized cognitive tasks showed significant improvements.
  • Males with objectively measured hearing loss saw the biggest gains from this combined training.
  • Females with self-reported hearing loss also showed substantial improvement, though the link between self-reported and objective hearing loss was weaker in women.

The takeaway

This research highlights a critical, yet often overlooked, factor in cognitive decline and mobility. It underscores the potential of non-pharmacological interventions.

  • Simple exercises, often doable at home, can make a difference.
  • Assessing hearing in MCI patients is crucial for comprehensive care.
  • Tailored training programs based on individual factors like sex and type of hearing loss could optimize outcomes.

The bottom line

Integrating hearing testing with physical and cognitive training offers a practical way to improve quality of life and reduce fall risk for older adults with MCI.
