Researchers at Monash and Deakin universities followed 2,192 Australian adults aged 40–70 and found a clear link between ultra-processed food consumption and worse attention and higher dementia risk. The kicker? A healthy diet won't cancel out the brain-damaging effects of ultra-processed foods.
Why it matters
For every 10% increase in ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption — roughly 150 grams per day, about one standard bag of potato chips — results in a 0.05-point drop in attention scores and a 0.24-point rise in modifiable dementia risk.
After controlling for eating a Mediterranean diet, there were no changes in these scores. Eating more fish and vegetables addresses only part of the problem.

The intrigue

A closer look
The study used two dementia risk tools. The modified CAIDE score, which measures only the factors a person can change, like blood pressure, BMI, and physical activity. It showed a statistically significant link to UPF consumption. The original CAIDE score lost significance once diet quality was factored in.
